Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Friday, September 25, 2026, and the United Nations spent Thursday demonstrating that diplomacy sometimes looks suspiciously like everybody getting up and leaving the meeting.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the podium at the U.N. General Assembly, and dozens of diplomats promptly walked out. The Palestinian Mission had encouraged other delegations to join the protest, saying the walkout was intended to oppose Israel’s conduct in Gaza and what it described as war crimes and illegal occupation. After the exodus, much of the chamber was left empty, with boos and chants loud enough that the General Assembly president repeatedly called for order. Netanyahu responded by calling the departing delegates “moral cowards.”
And apparently the room wasn’t enough. Hundreds of protesters were outside the U.N. in Manhattan, including Jewish, Palestinian, Iranian and Lebanese New Yorkers, elected officials and activists. Demonstrators blocked streets, diverted some official motorcades and held signs calling for an end to the war in Gaza and U.S. military support for Israel. Police moved in after protesters sat in the roadway, and several people were arrested as the demonstrations continued.
Inside, Netanyahu defended Israel’s attack on Iran, saying destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities had been “one of the easiest decisions” he had made as prime minister and arguing that Israel faced an existential threat if it did not act. He also claimed that some leaders whose diplomats walked out had privately thanked Israel for striking Iran. Israel’s government maintains the attacks were necessary for its security, while Iran and other governments have sharply disputed Israel’s justification and conduct.
Netanyahu also had plenty of praise for Donald Trump, calling him Israel’s strongest partner in the conflict and thanking him for what Netanyahu described as “bold leadership.” He credited the United States and Israel with acting together against Iran and specifically praised the American and Israeli pilots involved in joint military operations.
Then came the portion of the speech where the U.N. apparently became an international roast with significantly worse catering. Netanyahu attacked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, calling him a “tyrant,” accused Qatar and Turkey of spreading falsehoods about Israel, and criticized Western European governments for what he characterized as giving in to anti-Israel pressure. He also directly targeted New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying Mamdani had tried to silence him and accusing the mayor of making Jewish New Yorkers feel less safe. Mamdani has repeatedly called Netanyahu a war criminal and criticized Israel’s conduct in Gaza, while also acknowledging that New York City does not have the legal authority to arrest him under the International Criminal Court warrant.
Netanyahu rejected accusations that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, calling that charge “the biggest lie of the century.” Those allegations remain fiercely contested: Israel rejects them, while international organizations, governments, legal experts and Palestinian advocates continue to dispute Israel’s account of the war and its treatment of civilians.
Netanyahu also reached repeatedly for the Bible and Israel’s ancient religious history to make his case. He said Jews had been on the Golan Heights “since the days of Moses,” told critics to “read it in the Bible,” and later declared, “That’s our land: The Land of Israel.” He then praised values including “the sanctity of life” and an “eternal quest for peace.” And that creates a contradiction critics of his government keep pointing to: invoking faith, sacred values, peace and the value of human life while defending military actions that have produced enormous civilian suffering. Religious language may explain how Netanyahu frames Israel’s history, but it does not by itself settle the modern political, legal or moral questions surrounding what his government is doing today.
So, just to review Thursday’s diplomatic progress: diplomats walked out, protesters filled the streets, people got arrested, Netanyahu praised Trump, insulted several other leaders, and the person running the General Assembly spent part of the afternoon asking everyone to please settle down.
International diplomacy: now apparently available with audience participation. Looks like Bibi found out what’s it’s like to see what happens at a Trump Rally. Walkouts, small crowd size, and disagreements.
