"I Will Be Dying Soon": A Plea to Save the Social Safety Net
In Episode 09 of The Dangerous Ones, The People's Hotline was filled with concerns about Medicaid and Social Security.
On this week’s episode of The Dangerous Ones, The People’s Hotline was ablaze with folks expressing their concerns about the dismantling of the social safety net.
In one heartbreaking email that we read aloud on air, Anonymous from Massachusetts shared his story about the cessation of life-saving infusions of the drug Vyvgart, which cost $17,000 every time he goes, because his Medicaid plan Mass Health stopped issuing payments for them.
“I will be dying soon,” he said.
And he’s not alone.
If Republicans actually follow through on the spending bill that recently passed the House, at least $500 billion will have to be cut from Medicaid, Medicare and/or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
People will die as a result: 72 million Americans are insured through Medicaid alone.
So whether it’s through the demolition ball of DOGE making agencies like Health and Human Services completely dysfunctional or it’s the Republican Congress defunding the safety net, millions of Americans like Anonymous in Massachusetts are in jeopardy.
We talk about the threats to the safety net at length in Episode 09, which released Sunday morning.
But it’s not all doom and gloom!
