Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Saturday, September 5, 2026, and ICE is apparently entering its “more money, more people, more gadgets, what could possibly require oversight?” era.
The agency has been expanding fast. ICE hired roughly 12,000 officers in less than a year, while a whistleblower from its own Office of Professional Responsibility alleges the hiring rush involved an “unprecedented lowering” of vetting standards, including cases where basic background checks had not been completed before recruits moved forward. ICE says it continues to follow proper vetting requirements, and the DHS inspector general is investigating the hiring process.
Then there’s the equipment aisle. ICE awarded a $16.7 million no-bid contract for 6,000 electric-shock gloves, which the agency describes as a less-lethal tool for controlling resisting detainees. Sixteen Democratic senators have raised questions about training, medical risks and oversight. And DHS is also pursuing $1 million to $2 million worth of Boston Dynamics SPOT robot dogs for inspections, situational awareness and dangerous environments. Because apparently the phrase “ICE robot dog” has officially graduated from dystopian screenplay to federal procurement document.
And while all of that power is expanding, one ICE officer is now facing a very different kind of scrutiny.
Christian Castro pleaded not guilty Friday to six federal false-statement charges connected to a January shooting during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. Prosecutors allege Castro shot Venezuelan man Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg through a front door as Sosa-Celis was retreating inside, then falsely told investigators that Sosa-Celis, and another man, had attacked officers with a broom and shovel. Federal prosecutors originally charged the two men with assaulting ICE officers, but dropped those charges after video evidence contradicted the officers’ account. Castro has been suspended from ICE since February and also faces separate Minnesota state charges.
And that’s the part worth holding onto.
The first official version did not automatically become the final version. Video was examined. Charges against the men were dropped. Investigators kept going. Now an officer himself is facing prosecution over what authorities allege he told them.
Meanwhile, the Justice Department says states participating in TANF or SSI should require all state agencies to report people they know to be unlawfully present to DHS, and warns that states refusing to comply could risk federal program funding.
So if ICE is going to receive more money, hire more officers, buy new technology, and gain access to more information, then the answer shouldn’t be less scrutiny. It should be more receipts. More cameras. More whistleblowers. More investigators. More accountability. Because accountability isn’t anti-law-enforcement. It’s how law enforcement earns trust.
