Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Friday, September 18, 2026, and Washington would like an extension on the assignment. Nobody seems entirely sure where the assignment is, several pages are missing, and Mike Johnson has already gone home.
Mike Johnson canceled the House’s remaining votes and sent everybody into a more than six-week pre-election recess. Johnson says the House has been extraordinarily productive, while critics point to unfinished business and the voting days that disappeared from the calendar. Among the things now waiting until lawmakers return: Thomas Massie’s efforts involving Pete Hegseth and the Epstein files. Apparently Congress looked at its pile of unfinished work and bravely decided to stop looking at it.
Thomas Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, largely concerning Hegseth’s conduct surrounding the Iran war and constitutional war-powers questions. Johnson calls the effort a “stunt.” Massie made the resolution privileged, creating a mechanism that could have forced the House to deal with it. Instead, the House left. It’s difficult to lose a vote if you’ve misplaced the voting.
JD Vance is asking voters to give Republicans “another chance” or “another couple of years,” arguing that they’ve accomplished plenty but still have work left to do. Fair enough: every administration campaigns on unfinished business. But “give us more time” becomes a slightly tougher sales pitch when the next guy in our story is literally canceling work.
Then there's Mitch McConnell, who actually came back. At 84, after roughly three months away, McConnell returned saying he would try to be present for difficult votes when Republicans needed him. Almost immediately, his vote helped produce a 47–46 procedural result advancing Matthew Byrne, Trump's nominee for a lifetime federal judgeship in Ohio. Byrne is an Ohio appellate judge with nearly two decades of legal experience who was ultimately confirmed 52–45 the following day. McConnell's first day back became a pretty effective demonstration of just how much one empty Senate seat can matter.
And since Vance wants “another couple of years,” let’s check how many everybody has already had. The Senate’s average age is roughly 65, the House’s about 58.5, and approximately 134 members of Congress are at least 70.
Congress’s Longest-Serving Members
Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa, 51 years in Congress): House 1975–1981, Senate since 1981.
Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky, 41 years): Senate since 1985.
Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky, 45 years): House since 1981.
Chris Smith (R-New Jersey, 45 years): House since 1981.
Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland, 45 years): House since 1981.
Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio, 43 years): House since 1983.
Age doesn’t tell us whether somebody can do the job. But after four decades, asking for “another couple of years” does start sounding less like a deadline and more like a subscription plan.
Then Kash Patel arrived to remind everyone that sometimes government hearings contain sentences you absolutely did not have on your bingo card. Patel defended an FBI hiring-policy change involving applicants who engaged in bestiality before age 18, saying advisers showed him actual cases involving people who had been forced into the conduct, including trafficking victims. Protecting people who were coerced or abused is entirely reasonable. But it raises an unusually specific question: How often is this coming up at FBI job interviews? Senators are now requesting records showing who approved the change and how many applicants have actually been affected by it. Somewhere, an FBI background-check form has become significantly longer than any of us anticipated.
And that’s where Epstein comes crashing back into the conversation. Congress and the courts are still fighting over records involving actual, identifiable victims. Massie is pursuing another discharge effort seeking additional disclosure, while a federal judge has now warned Attorney General Todd Blanche that contempt could eventually become appropriate if DOJ fails to comply with the court’s renewed Epstein-records order. Some redactions are intended to protect survivors, but the court dispute concerns whether additional material has been properly withheld.
Which makes this one hell of a week for the word accountability. Vance wants another chance. Johnson sent the House home. McConnell came back and immediately showed what one vote can do. Massie wants votes on Hegseth and Epstein. Patel says actual cases prompted a remarkably specific FBI policy change, and senators would now like to see the paperwork explaining it.
This creates an impressive number of questions for a government currently asking America to renew its subscription.
And that’s the bigger problem. Elections are when politicians ask us for more time. Oversight is what they’re supposed to do with the time we’ve already given them. You don’t get to ask the boss for another two-year contract while closing the laptop, putting on your coat and yelling, “We’ll deal with that investigation when we get back!”
While Washington hits the snooze button again, with 63 voting days canceled this Congress and counting, we thought you could use a laugh!! 😂 Below we’ve got episode links, variety memes, great comments and calls from the Danger Corps, the usual dangerous fun to keep your Friday fresh!

Only TRUMP can pull off the Mussolini head shake, as if your great leader has just spoken! I will end the Ukraine War in one day, quite frankly, it’s already over! The TRUMP strait is open, the WAR is over with Iran, in fact Iran is begging me, your president, but I don’t believe them, but they love me, everyone is saying!
