Hello, Danger Corps! Itās Monday, September 14, 2026, and Donald Trump has looked at artificial intelligence moving at warp speed and apparently decided the biggest problem is that somebody keeps mentioning brakes.
Over the weekend, Trump pushed back on calls to slow AI development, arguing America canāt afford to lose the race to China. And thereās a fair point buried in there: AI could bring enormous advances in medicine, science, accessibility and productivity. But if America is about to build this technology at breakneck speed, thereās another useful American tradition we should probably try: Follow the money.
AI doesnāt actually live in a magical cloud. It lives in enormous data centers requiring huge amounts of electricity, land, cooling infrastructure and, in many cases, water. That means the AI boom is also a power-company boom, a construction boom and increasingly a neighborhood debate over utility bills, water, pollution and what exactly is being built next door.
And just as AIās appetite for electricity is growing, Trump is pushing to loosen environmental restrictions and expand energy production, including fossil-fuel generation. The administration argues this will provide cheaper, more reliable power and help America compete. Critics warn that loosening pollution and climate protections while adding massive new electricity demand could leave communities absorbing more of the environmental cost.
Basically, the cloud has a giant electric meter, and somebody still has to plug it into Earth.
Now follow the money another step.
SoftBank donated $50 million to Trumpās presidential library project in January. Two months later, the administration announced a major federal-land agreement involving a massive SoftBank data center. Democratic lawmakers are investigating whether there was any connection. That timing doesnāt prove a payoff, but it does qualify for the investigative category of āWell, thatās interesting.ā
Trumpās financial disclosures also show millions invested in companies positioned to benefit from data-center construction, including power and cooling suppliers. His organization says outside financial managers choose those investments. Still, when the president is yelling ābuild more data centers,ā checking who owns stock in the shovel companies seems reasonable.
Then thereās Trumpās other relationship with AI: he uses the hell out of it.
His political operation has increasingly posted AI-generated versions of Trump as superheroes, military commanders and assorted digital action figures, along with more controversial manipulated political content. Making silly AI pictures isnāt inherently dangerous. Again: hello, have you met us? But political leaders using synthetic media while arguing against stronger restrictions certainly makes the guardrail conversation a little less theoretical.
And some people who actually helped build this technology are raising much bigger questions. Former OpenAI researcher and whistleblower Daniel Kokotajlo has warned that extremely advanced AI could eventually become difficult for humans to control, including worst-case scenarios researchers call āAI extinction risk.ā That does not mean ChatGPT is secretly planning our demise while helping Grandma write her casserole recipe. It means some experts believe the technology could eventually become powerful enough that safety should probably keep pace with development.
