Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and Washington is running on a simple four-step plan: make a mess, lose the paperwork, go home early, blame the audio.
At the U.N., Donald Trump defended his decision to go to war with Iran and argued that Tehran stalled negotiations, while back home his administration announced plans to remove roughly 760,000 people from Affordable Care Act exchanges over enrollments it says are fraudulent or invalid. Meanwhile, ICE has stopped publicly showing the locations of many detainees with final removal orders, making it harder for families and attorneys to find people once they enter federal custody.
And today we especially want to send our love and strength to Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez and his family, the 28-year-old Venezuelan DoorDash driver who was shot by an ICE officer in Austin, Texas. His family and attorneys have described struggling to get clear information after he was moved from the hospital into ICE detention, while lawmakers are demanding that he receive medical treatment and that the shooting be independently investigated.
That comes as families and witnesses directly affected by five fatal shootings involving federal immigration officers appeared at a Democratic-led congressional public forum, sometimes called a shadow hearing. The forum included relatives of Martinez, Good, and Salgado Araujo, the woman who recorded Pretti’s shooting, and an attorney representing Durán Guerrero’s family.
To say their names again: Ruben Ray Martinez. Renée Nicole Macklin Good. Alex Pretti. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.
And because Congress apparently decided the appropriate response to all of this was to leave town, Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House home early for campaign season. The House isn’t even in session Tuesday or Wednesday, despite plenty of unfinished business waiting back in Washington. Johnson says Republicans have had an extraordinarily productive Congress. Apparently productivity now includes turning off the lights, setting the voicemail and trusting America not to have any follow-up questions.
Which brings us to the considerably less heartbreaking and considerably more ridiculous portion of today’s program: Donald Trump temporarily discovering what it feels like when nobody can hear you. Trump’s fight with the press produced a spectacular little piece of irony this week. After CNN, MS NOW and Politico were barred from the White House and other television outlets suspended their pool participation, one of Trump’s own White House appearances went out with lousy audio. Viewers could see the president speaking, but much of what he was saying was difficult to hear. Apparently after restricting other people’s platforms, the president temporarily misplaced his own.
While Washington sorts through all of that, we thought you could use a laugh!! 😂
