I am a nurse and currently work for a hospital. When family is involved, though it can be a little extra stressful for us, it is most often the thing that helps the patient go back home the soonest.
I started my career in healthcare working as a personal care worker in group homes (it's ultimately what led me to signing up for nursing school) and it was my employer’s mission to focus on integrating these people, young and old, of a whole spectrum of abilities, into the community they lived in.
Grocery stores, parks, bowling alleys. Maybe we'd endure a little breakdown, but nothing we couldn't handle because we actually cared. The mission was to NOT keep them locked away from the general public as if they were too unsightly, or they were too obstructive, or they were f-ing contagious.
By the way, most people would say disabilities, but how pessimistic and non-empathetic is that label?
This f-ed up administration is planning on getting their own and their friends' pockets even more plump and overflowing into multiple bank accounts. Guaranteed. It's all about money and power.
The plan seems to be to push people out of their homes and onto the streets. Hello crimes of desperation by these people or their caretakers (bonus of increased occupancy in jails and prisons for those friends' wallets and bank accounts), as well as crimes of abuse toward these vulnerable people.
Or, if and when they can get more support somewhere from the government or a corporation (like medicaid, private insurance, etc.), they will be basically thrown into institutionalized capitalistic long-term “care" facilities, including hospitals (possibly frequent trips and held there until their medicaid application goes through or until placement is secured, a bed becomes available somewhere, keeping that bed occupied that could be available for you and me, like a car crash patient or a person with cancer), as well as foster homes, group homes, and nursing homes.
Away from their loved ones and their familiar surroundings. Sometimes having to move around to find a good fit. Sometimes not really ever finding the right fit.
Give these people at least these two things, familiar environment and familiar loved ones, typically a far less traumatic life, and allow them to also have food to eat (though it's not the best because SNAP pays for more junk than healthy food because it's cheaper and also lines and fills the pockets of the executives of corporate phamaceutical companies, and healthcare facilities, etc. because we all know what eating mostly junk food leads to….illness, preventable conditions like heart disease and diabetes)
And let these family members and loved ones have the help from the government (it's not even nearly enough now) for doing the intense job of caring for the ‘disabled" person, and basically living two lives just to make ends sort of meet, because they also have their other job.

My mom ran up her credit card over $50,000 for my little brother's Medical Care, she is still paying it off and my brother died in 2014. As awful as it is to say, I'm glad he's not around to see this and I am enraged at the fact that they're attacking so many people who just need a little help while the Villainaires get everything. It's time for a revolution, it's time for the villains to pay their fair share.
Regrettably, with the cuts to Medicaid, nursing homes for disabled people are already closing. If disabled adults lose their income that helps with family housing costs resulting in the family being unable to keep their housing, there will be more people living and dying on the streets. I fully expect this administration to sweep them up and send them to concentration camps like they've done with immigrants. How's that for making America great?
