Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Tuesday, September 22, 2026, and foreign policy has apparently found a new communications department: the giant glowing sign at the gas station.
Regular gasoline is averaging about $4.48 nationally, up roughly 34 cents since Labor Day, an increase of about 8% in less than three weeks. More painfully, diesel has reached roughly $6.51 a gallon. Iran continues to say the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen until the U.S. meets conditions from the collapsed June agreement, while Trump has previously insisted the Strait was open and said no negotiations were happening. Actual shipping remains heavily disrupted. So, somewhere between “open” and “closed” sits the traditional diplomatic category known as your debit card knows the answer.
And now the trucking world is feeling it. A typical long-haul tractor can carry 240 to 300 gallons across two tanks. At today’s diesel price, filling roughly 95% of that capacity from empty would run approximately $1,485 to $1,855. Company drivers generally have fuel covered by their carrier. Owner-operators generally do not. That distinction matters when diesel suddenly begins behaving like a luxury fragrance.
You may also have seen claims that American truckers are staging a nationwide strike beginning October 1. Right now, that is not confirmed. There is online chatter and anger over fuel costs, but no verified national organizer, Teamsters action or major trucking-association announcement. Larger company fleets are especially different from independent operators because their employed drivers generally are not personally buying the diesel. If a significant shutdown ever did develop, though, groceries and perishables, medicine, fuel distribution, auto manufacturing, e-commerce and other just-in-time freight would be among the areas to watch because trucks move about 73% of U.S. freight tonnage.
Meanwhile, remember electric cars? Tesla’s U.S. sales through August were down about 16% from a year earlier, although its share of the EV market actually rose to about 52% because the overall American EV market fell even faster, roughly 30%. So Elon Musk has managed the unusual corporate achievement of losing sales while gaining market share. Somewhere, a spreadsheet is demanding a therapist.
The bigger picture is less mysterious. War disrupts energy routes. Energy disruptions raise oil and refining costs. Diesel gets hammered. Trucks move nearly everything. Transportation costs work their way into everything from lettuce to lumber. That does not mean every penny at the pump comes from one policy decision, but the speed of this latest increase is occurring alongside the Iran war and continuing Hormuz disruption, during a time of year when gasoline prices ordinarily tend to ease. AAA reported increases of 13 cents in one week, followed by another 16 cents the next, and you may have seen some higher increases in your area.
Since apparently the shortest route from the Strait of Hormuz to your kitchen now runs directly through a semi-truck fuel pump and your grocery receipt, we thought you could use a laugh!! 😂
