Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Saturday, September 19, 2026, and America has apparently reopened the vaccine group project even though somebody already turned it in decades ago.
The immediate reason this matters is measles. As of September 17, the CDC had recorded 3,471 confirmed U.S. cases across 47 jurisdictions, up 177 in one week, with 95% connected to outbreaks. Kindergarten MMR coverage has fallen from 95.2% in 2019-20 to 92.4% in 2025-26, leaving roughly 280,000 kindergarteners without documented protection. Pennsylvania has been hit especially hard, including four measles-associated deaths. Measles was declared eliminated from continuous U.S. transmission in 2000, so this is less “new medical mystery” and more “why is this back on the roster?”
Measles is not the only thing doctors are watching. COVID activity has been elevated, common respiratory infections are circulating as kids return to school, and health departments are simultaneously tracking the ordinary parade of illnesses that never asked permission from the news cycle. It is facing several real health issues that require accurate information, careful disease tracking, and people actually doing their jobs. Public health calls for “surveillance,” which feels like an unfortunate word choice during America’s ongoing debate over just how much surveillance we already have.
That is what makes the vaccine debate particularly strange. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke Thursday at the Children’s Health Defense conference, the organization he formerly chaired, and highlighted administration efforts to alter vaccine policies and recommendations. At the same time, Trump’s current Surgeon General nominee, Dr. Nicole Saphier, told senators that vaccines do not cause autism and defended MMR vaccination as the best tool against measles. Apparently truth is still allowed into the room, whether is appreciated is a different question.
And while our immune systems are apparently working overtime, the refrigerator would also like a meeting.
The FDA is currently dealing with several unrelated food recalls and investigations. This week included So Delicious dairy free frozen dessert recalled over possible small stones or other hard material, J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Chips recalled for undeclared soy, and an ongoing Salmonella investigation involving recalled broccoli sprouts. Earlier September recalls included ready to eat deli salads and cream cheese over possible Listeria contamination. These are different products, companies, and hazards, so they should not be treated as one giant food-safety outbreak. They are also a pretty good demonstration of why inspections, testing, reporting, and recall systems exist in the first place.
Meanwhile, the People Doing the Work…
Doctors and nurses are not waiting for Washington to finish arguing. Pediatricians are talking families through vaccination questions. Nurses and pharmacists are checking records and administering vaccines. Laboratories and local health departments are finding cases, tracing exposures and alerting communities. Pennsylvania alone has been using pop-up clinics and partnerships with health care providers and community organizations to get MMR vaccinations into affected communities.
That matters because good public health is usually spectacularly unglamorous. When it works, somebody identifies a contaminated product before more people eat it, notices an outbreak before it becomes larger, answers a nervous parent’s questions, or gives someone a vaccine and sends them home with ointment and a Band-Aid.
But there is room here for people who genuinely have questions.
What Can We Do?
Check your family’s vaccination records. If you are unsure, ask a health-care professional or local health department.
Check recalls before panicking about recalls. The FDA maintains a searchable current recall list, and USDA does the same for meat and poultry. A recall affecting one lot or region does not automatically mean every version of that food is unsafe. The FDA’s current recall page lists the specific product, reason and company involved.
If measles is suspected, call before showing up at a clinic. That gives medical staff a chance to prevent exposing babies, pregnant people, immunocompromised patients and everybody else in the waiting room.
Public health works better when people trust the people providing it.
