Hello, Danger Corps! It’s Friday, October 2, 2026, and Washington has reactivated its favorite out-of-office reply.
Congress has officially left town until after the November 3 midterms, which means most lawmakers have traded legislating for campaigning for the next month. Convenient timing, because a new AP-NORC poll found just 17% of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s handling of the cost of living and 26% approve of his handling of the economy overall. Trump’s response? Hit the road. He kicked off a 32-day campaign blitz Thursday in Texas and Oklahoma, because apparently the cure for bad economic polling is more microphones.
And while Congress packed its bags, the military packed considerably heavier. The U.S. is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and USS Makin Island amphibious group toward the Middle East, potentially putting three American aircraft carriers in the region later this month as tensions with Iran continue. So Washington’s current staffing plan appears to be: fewer senators, more aircraft carriers.
